What Hopick is not
It's easy to say what Hopick is. It's harder to say what it's not — but that's where the character of a product shows. So, in the spirit of honesty we try to keep, here are the things we've decided Hopick will not be.
Not a feed of everything that ever happened
The internet's favourite model is a river of everything. Post, post, post, forever, sorted by nothing you control. It's efficient at producing volume, and almost nothing else. Hopick is not that. A feed that shows you everything teaches you to value nothing, and it teaches everyone posting that the only way to be heard is to shout. We want a feed you can shape — by topic, by interest, by what a neighbourhood is actually talking about — not a river you get swept down.
Not a machine for your attention
Some apps are built to keep you in them. Not by being good, but by being sticky. Every notification, every badge, every autoplay is a little lever pulling on your time. We built Hopick instead to respect your time — to be fast, to work offline, to let you close it whenever you like, without the app treating your departure as a failure it has to correct. We'd rather you leave freely than linger against your will.
Not a place for everyone at once
A platform that tries to be for everyone ends up not quite for anyone. We'd rather be clearly for one city — Hong Kong — and for the many circles inside it, than to be a thin copy of something global. There's a cost to that: outsiders may find less here. We accept it, because the thing we're building is a home, and a home has a door.
Not a gaming machine
Some products are built like slot machines: a little reward, uncertain, delivered on a schedule that makes you want to pull the lever again. Engagement is measured in the number of pulls. Hopick is not a gaming machine. We don't want to measure you in time spent, or optimise a loop to keep you coming back. If you leave, we hope you leave glad, not stranded on a loop of habit.
Not a content farm
There's a kind of app that's really a broadcast — one source pouring words and ads at everyone, with "community" as a thin decoration painted round it. Hopick is not a content farm. It's a place where people talk to each other, and the product's job is to get out of the way. There's no editorial line here, no team of writers deciding what you should see. The feed is what you and your neighbours make it.
Not in a hurry
The last thing Hopick is not is finished. It never will be. We're not trying to be the biggest anything, or to win some race. That's a relief, actually. It lets us do the one thing we actually care about: making a good, honest home for a city, and improving it one decision at a time. If that sounds like a smaller ambition than what you're used to seeing, good. It suits us.
If any of this speaks to you, come build the thing with us — the door's open on our Discord.
