Why Hopick exists
The short version: Hopick is a place for people in Hong Kong to share what matters, in their own language, without a feed trying to keep them staring at it all day.
A feed built for the city it lives in
Most social apps were designed in California and translated into Cantonese later, if at all. The feeds are built to hold your attention for as long as possible, and the language of the platform is whatever the headquarters speaks. That's fine for some things. It has never quite fit here.
Hopick is different in a small but important way. It was built in Hong Kong, for Hong Kong people, and its default language is 廣東話. Not as a setting you dig out of the menu, but the way the app greets you the first time you open it. A newcomer lands in Cantonese before they ever see a toggle.
That choice says what this app is. It's not trying to be everything to everyone on earth. It's trying to be a good home for one particular city, and for the many overlapping communities inside it.
A lighter way to find your people
Big feeds run on volume. More content, more notifications, more time on screen — the metric is engagement, and engagement is measured in minutes. Hopick is built the other way round. Posting is lightweight, discovery runs on topics, and following the subjects you actually care about — a district, a hobby, a university, a neighbourhood — is meant to be easy.
It's a smaller ambition, on purpose. Instead of showing you everything that ever happened, we want to show you the things worth your time, from people worth listening to. That means a feed that loads instantly, works offline, and doesn't punish you for closing the app.
Cantonese as a default, not a feature
Language is the thing people notice last and feel first. A Hong Kong person scrolling a feed in English or in textbook Mandarin is never quite at home, even if they can't say why. Writing in 廣東話 is a small act of respect: the app meets you in the language you actually speak with your friends, instead of the one a corporation chose for you.
We're not precious about it. Hopick works in English and in written Chinese too. But it starts in Cantonese, and that tells you whose home this is meant to be.
Made by people who can change its mind
Hopick is built by ZHHK, a Hong Kong team that makes a single product and nothing else. That's a small thing, but it matters: it keeps the product honest. There's no content farm behind it, no ad business pulling in another direction, no demand that growth happen at any price this quarter. When something in the app isn't working for the people using it, there is nothing else pretending otherwise. That's a constraint we like.
It also means we move carefully. New things ship when they're ready, and we're quick to undo our own mistakes. The first version of Hopick had a full club system — icons, banners, moderation duties. It turned out to be more than most people needed, so we took it out and replaced it with something lighter. Being small enough to change your mind is, we think, part of the point.
What we're asking of you
An app like this only works if it's a place people want to be, and that's not something code can guarantee. We're asking the people who read this to do what they can: post the thing you've been meaning to share, join a topic you love, tell us what's broken, and tell us louder when something's great.
